How it works

What the child does
Solves addition and subtraction to 25 and writes each result under its sum.

How it's checked
Each result stands for a letter in the cipher code. Correct sums spell real words, and a wrong sum gives a letter that doesn't fit.

Why it works
The child checks their own work: if the message doesn't make sense, one of the sums is wrong.
