Bridging ten worksheets
Sums like 8 + 5 or 14 − 6 cross the ten, and that is where most first graders slow down. The trick is to go to ten first: 8 + 2 makes 10, then 3 more makes 13. These sheets practise exactly that step in several different formats.

Tips for practising
- Practise the pairs that make ten (1 + 9, 2 + 8 …) until they are instant; bridging depends on them.
- Split the second number out loud: “8 + 5 is 8 + 2 + 3”.
- For subtraction, go back to ten first: 14 − 6 is 14 − 4 − 2.
